About the 2020 Awards
The new and improved 2020 Presidents’ Engaged Campus Awards recognize, celebrate, and tell the story of great individuals, projects, and programs in both Iowa and Minnesota. Through the presidents’ awards categories every campus has the opportunity to recognize students, faculty & staff, and partners leading the way in their campus community. We also have selective award categories to showcase innovation, collaboration, employer partnerships, and civic-minded alumni. The new process combines the best of past awards in each state. While the awards process is the same in both states, awards will still be presented at individual events in each state: April 17, 2020, 11:30 am – 1:30 pm at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota and May 5, 2020, 11:30 am – 1:30 pm at the Des Moines Botanical Gardens in Iowa.
We will provide one complimentary ticket to the awards luncheon per award. This means that if a group is being recognized, we will provide one complimentary ticket for a representative of the group to attend the event. If the group would like to send additional guests, tickets will be available for purchase.
Each president or chancellor from an Iowa or Minnesota Campus Compact member campus may select one recipient (individual or group) in each of the following three categories. A campus may select a recipient for one, two, or all three of the categories. Each recipient selected by their president/chancellor will be recognized at the awards event in their state. Please, only one presidents’ award selection per category, per campus. To avoid confusion, ensure only the president/chancellor’s designee submits this award selection information. Please fill out the presidents’ awards section below including contact information, a brief (50 words or less) description of the reasons that person, group, or organization was selected for this recognition, and a photograph of the recipient.
– Presidents’ Student Leadership Award: This award is for an individual student or a student organization that models a deep commitment to civic responsibility and leadership, evidenced by initiative, innovative and collaborative approaches to addressing public issues, effective community building, and integration of civic engagement into the college experience.
– Presidents’ Civic Engagement Leadership Award: This award is for a member of the faculty, administration, or staff or for a group (e.g., advisory committee, task force, project team) that has significantly advanced their campus’ distinctive civic mission by forming strong partnerships, supporting others’ civic and community engagement, and working to institutionalize a culture and practice of engagement.
– Presidents’ Community Partner Award: This award is for a community-based individual or organization that has enhanced the quality of life in the community in meaningful and measurable ways and has engaged in the development of sustained, reciprocal partnerships with the college or university, thus enriching educational as well as community outcomes.
Presidents’ Awards Process: We encourage presidents and chancellors to use a process that works in their campus context and includes both campus- and community-based civic engagement leaders in selecting award recipients based on the criteria above. The specific process used to identify honorees is determined by the individual campus. The ways campuses selected award recipients in previous years have included:
– President/Chancellor issuing an open call for nominations on campus, with a committee selecting recipients
– A civic engagement committee recommending finalists to the President, who selected the recipients
– President/Chancellor using this opportunity to further recognize winners of other on-campus awards
Selective Engaged Campus Awards
In order to spotlight great projects, partnerships, and programs, we also accept nominations for the following selective award categories. These nominations are reviewed by outside reviewers and one awardee per state is selected each year. Nominations for these awards can come from employees, students, alumni and community partners of Iowa and Minnesota Campus Compact member institutions (self-nominations accepted). Nominees must be affiliated with a Campus Compact member institution in Iowa or Minnesota as an employee, volunteer, student, alum, or community partner. Nominations will be evaluated by a review committee using a rubric described in this document. Awards will not necessarily be given each year in each category.
– Emerging Innovation Award: A recent project, program, or initiative making unique and innovative contributions that demonstrate strong future potential, including student-led projects.
– Community Collaboration Award: A collaboration co-created with community organizations, leaders, and/or partners that is deep, reciprocal, and transformational.
– Civic-Minded Employer Award: An Iowa or Minnesota business nominated by a member institution for its commitment to corporate social responsibility and employee engagement in community.
– Alumni Leadership Award: An alum of a member institution making strong contributions to their community and demonstrating the values of the civic mission of higher education.
