An experience in my life that has shaped my decision to spend a year as an AmeriCorps VISTA:
My first semester of college I took an introductory public health course. The first thing that my professor said was that “when public health works, nothing happens” which I found fascinating. Major health concerns such as infectious diseases, car accident fatalities, food safety and so on have been greatly minimized through immunizations, seat belts, and regulations for the safety of consumers. These public health achievements have become the standard in our society to the point where we no longer think or worry about these topics. Since then, I have wanted to help create the same effect with other public health issues. Working a year with AmeriCorps VISTA will give me the opportunity to apply what I have learned in my health promotion classes to real communities. I am eager to serve, learn new perspectives, grow as a person, and see the difference I can make during my service year.
Three words that best describe me:
Enthusiastic, friendly, and empathetic
One thing I can’t live without:
My friends and family
Something I like to do for fun:
Hiking, being outdoors, listening to music, singing, traveling, and meeting new people!
