Better Angels Moderator Training

February 2 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Over the last five decades, more Americans have come to support interracial marriage, but fewer now want their family members to marry someone with a different political affiliation. That’s just one sign of growing polarization, distrust, and contempt.

Do you want to bring together people who lean red and blue politically to talk with, rather than simply at or about one another? We’re excited to announce an opportunity to partner with Better Angels to organize workshops that foster mutual understanding and even some common ground. Some of the workshops that have happened in Minnesota and elsewhere have produced ongoing Better Angels alliances of liberals and conservatives working together in their community — and you can learn more about the model and its results from:

Minnesota Campus Compact and Better Angels are co-sponsoring a training for people interested in organizing and moderating these workshops. It will take place on Friday, February 2, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at LeadMN, 1515 South Robert St., West St. Paul, MN 55118. The training will be led by Bill Doherty, a family therapist, University of Minnesota faculty member, and senior fellow with Better Angels. The registration cost is $15 to cover food and beverages.

Please note that participation in the moderator training is limited to 25 people, with preference given to those at Minnesota Campus Compact member institutions. We also strongly encourage campuses to send a pair of people to this training–one who identifies as blue and one as red. Better Angels has found that co-organizers with different political leanings will be more successful at recruiting workshop participants from both sides, because they can access different networks and demonstrate the sponsors’ commitment to inclusive discussion. Preference will be given to those applying in such a pair.

Applications to participate in the moderator training are due no later than January 16, 2018, at 11:59 p.m. Central. See the details and the application form at https://betterangels.typeform.com/to/dImALn. Most applicants will know whether they were accepted for the training within three days of their submitting the application. All applicants will be notified by January 20, 2018.
